Geography
Madison County encompasses nearly 805 square miles,
while Huntsville contains about 155 square miles within its city limits.
The city rises nearly 600 feet above sea level with parts of the area
rising 1,800 feet above sea level. The city is located 300 miles north of
the Gulf of Mexico, between the Tennessee River and the Appalachian
Mountains. It is 100 miles south of Nashville, 100 miles north of
Birmingham and 195 miles west of Atlanta. The area is served by Interstate
565 and is closely linked to Interstate 65.
