Cover Story: Russ Russell Commercial Real Estate

Russ RussellHuntsville’s commercial real estate market is full of challenging opportunities, and for Russ Russell, tapping into the many investment options of the local market has become a way of life. Russ Russell is the owner and broker of Russ Russell Commercial Real Estate. The company, founded by Russ in 1987, specializes in the commercial and investment brokerage business, leasing, tax-deferred exchanges, and build-to-suit properties. This dynamic professional knows that to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that arise daily in this field, both experience and education are necessary to meet the numerous challenges of this fast growing and ever changing marketplace. Russ Russell and his team are obviously meeting their goals, as this year marks their 15th Anniversary.

A native Huntsvillian, Russ Russell’s experience is enhanced by his familiarity with the local market, and he is able to provide clients with comprehensive, valuable and in-depth understanding of the area’s commercial real estate business. Russ has a B.S.B.A. degree in real estate from the University of Alabama, and it is estimated that only 1% of all realtors have a degree in real estate. Russ Russell is Huntsville’s first Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), a designation conferred by the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. The designation process ensures that CCIMs are proficient not only in theory, but also in practice. Every professional working toward the designation must successfully complete a graduate-level curriculum totaling 200 classroom hours. Candidates are also required to document professional transactions and pass a day-long comprehensive examination. Only 1% of all realtors hold the elite CCIM Designation, reflecting not only the caliber of the program, but also the reason it is the most coveted and respected designation in commercial-investment real estate. In addition, he is Huntsville’s first Certified Exchange Adviser (CEA), a designation obtained through the American Institute of Real Estate Exchangers. Real estate exchanging pertains to section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code, and allows individuals to "Pay No Capital Gains Tax" when disposing of business or investment-held real estate. This tax law has been part of the Internal Revenue Code since 1921. It is estimated that only 1% of all Realtors hold the CEA designation. The CCIM and CEA designations reflect hours of dedicated study in the areas of real estate disciplines to meet the rigorous certification process, as well as Russ Russell’s commitment to exemplify the industry’s highest professional and ethical standards.

Since the company’s founding, Russ Russell has introduced the city’s commercial real estate market to a new level of excellence. His combination of insight, knowledge and experience has become the solid foundation on which he builds his relationships. As clients look to build profitable investment portfolios, they look to Russ Russell to assist them. Using his innate ability and considerable business acumen, he can minimize the client’s investment risk.

Enfinger Development, Inc.

Sandra Steele, Enfinger Development, Inc.The distinctive stacked stone entrance and southern magnolias along the white fence row welcome you to the The Town of Waterford at Heritage Plantation, an Enfinger Development planned community.

Waterford and Waterford Manor are the newest of the Heritage Plantation neighborhoods. Spanning over 100 acres of the 700+ acre planned community, Waterford offers both lakeside living as well as the privacy of estate living. This community enjoys the convenience of a country club lifestyle with 35+ acres of stocked lakes for fishing, miles of paved trails and nature trails for walking or jogging, and 90 acres of parks.

"The best places to live share the same name- Enfinger Development, is an ad campaign that is exemplary of the commitment of our company", says Sandra Steele, president of Enfinger Development (pictured). "Our business philosophy is simple – to serve our customer - and that means creating the very best for today’s discriminating home buyers."

"There are no shortcuts to success in the development business," says Steele. "We have a great group of professionals who believe in honesty and hard work." EDI’s founder, Jeff Enfinger, is the company’s ‘master planner’ and strategist. As a partner in Hampton Cove, Enfinger was the first to bring master planned communities to our area more than a decade ago. Enfinger has distinguished himself as a designer capable of meeting the challenge of preserving the natural amenities of a tract of land, with wise use of open areas and conservation of the natural resources available. "An integral part of the design process is to begin with the end in mind," said Enfinger. "We make every effort to demonstrate a complete knowledge of the most environmentally acceptable use of the land throughout the design phase."

"We are a company committed to environmentally responsible development," says Steele. Donating hundreds of acres of adjoining lands for preservation and providing the gift of a tree to each homeowner for the Annual Arbor Day Celebration are examples of EDI’s commitment. "What better gift than a tree," said Steele. "Trees provide an element of beauty that manmade structures cannot match."

"Community" is the core ingredient of The Town of Waterford, as it is with every Enfinger Development. Communities where homeowners can seek balance in their lives – spending time with families outdoors, gathering with neighbors at the Carriage House, or simply enjoying quiet time walking on nature trails. "That’s what we strive to do," said Steele. "As developers, we provide the unity of neighborhood and environment, and our homeowners bring the heart and soul that makes it home."

The Town of Waterford is located at Heritage Plantation, on County Line Road in Madison. Other Enfinger Development communities include Heritage Provence, also on County Line Road in Madison, Heritage Station on Browns Ferry Road in Madison, Clift’s Cove on Hughes Road in Madison, King’s Ridge in southeast Huntsville, Adams Alley in downtown Huntsville, and Mt. Carmel by the River in Northeast Madison County. For sales information, please call Rhonda Pugh at (256) 533-1155, or visit the recently expanded website at www.enfingerdevelopment.com.

National League of Junior Cotillions

Judy DarwinJudy Darwin (photo), the Director of the National League of Junior Cotillions in Huntsville, started the business in Georgia six years ago and within a year of relocating to this area, founded the local chapter. A professional fundraiser in AR, Judy had the opportunity to meet Barbara Bush. This turned out to be a significant and enlightening moment in her life, as she realized then the importance of instructing young adults in the right etiquette and social graces.

Few institutions today can claim to have a positive impact on our nation’s youth. Certainly, we as parents are aware of the many influences reaching our children in ways we often feel powerless to control. The National League of Junior Cotillions offers parents a welcome alternative for their children, through a program that builds self-confidence, character and helps set boundaries of behavior.

Judy Darwin is committed to ensuring all participants leave with self-confidence and poise. Students learn the proper etiquette for any social situation while also receiving instruction in ballroom dance, thus gaining the leadership qualities that others will follow. Quite simply, she teaches the ladies to be ladies and the gentleman to be gentleman. For adults, she offers Business Etiquette Workshops that provide the proper social skills for both business and social occasions; training such as this has never been more in demand than the present moment.

For Judy, "It is not a matter of where you are from, but rather where you are going and how you conduct yourself while on the journey."

For more information on the Huntsville Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillions, please call (256) 882-3330 or via e-mail at: cotillion2@home.com.

The Gulas Group

Ted GulasFeeling overwhelmed by a lack of clarity and focus, or out of control because too much time is spent at work rather than with your family? Having a problem setting strategic objectives and accomplishing them in a timely manner or disgusted with your sales cycle taking weeks or months to close instead of days or weeks? Well, if so, this is where the customized development initiatives provided by The Gulas Group can assist in fundamentally rethinking how individuals, teams and organizations view the tasks, processes and tools of performance that deliver extraordinary strategic outcomes on time.

Ted Gulas, CEO of The Gulas Group, developed his company after spending several years in the restaurant industry, real estate development, and working as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for a worldwide manufacturer of lighting here in Huntsville. The latter position is where Ted’s professional development and selling skills were refined for his entry into maximizing human potential. He founded The Gulas Group in November of 1989. The purpose was to incorporate his entrepreneurial background and his worldwide corporate experience to bring a development organization to Alabama, which provides proven and measurable results.

One element to The Gulas Group success consists of a combination of strategic partnerships formed with the owners of local companies such as Dr. Jennie Robinson of Personal Best Training, and Donna Cash at Office Tech Systems. He also has partnerships with companies on the international level, such as Priority Management Systems Inc., Objective Management Group, and The Sales Warrior Team. Each partner is a content expert in their relevant field and subscribes to the theory of continuous, customized ongoing and reinforced development.

Having content experts available to deliver solutions across a platform of deciding, doing and delivering work linked to assessments of individual and organization competencies, behaviors and processes is extremely effective at delivering extraordinary long-term performance as opposed to quick-fix smile training.

Also quite unusual to their industry is their guarantee, which offers a measurable return of investment on every initiative they provide or the client pays absolutely nothing! Obviously it must be working, since they have assisted such corporate giants as Am South Bank and Parker Hannifin, as well as local organizations such as Theatrical Lighting Systems, and numerous Government and nonprofit organizations such as the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and American Red Cross.

The Gulas Group is available for coaching, speeches and keynotes to associations or organizations on various topics. They can provide workplace assessments, such as The Priority Profile and the Objective Management Group Screenings for new sales force hires, and profiles for existing salesperson evaluations, as well as sales team overviews.

Gary Poulain wrote "The Gulas Group has the ability to convert conceptual ideas into brilliant practical reality." Please stop by their virtual office at www.gulasgroup.com or call: (256) 464-9046 or 1-800-239-2910.

EyeCare Madison

EyeCare MadisonOwned and operated by William E. Holcomb, III, M.D. and Terry L. Dawson, M.D., EyeCare Madison is a satellite office of EyeCare Cullman. EyeCare Madison was opened in 1998 by Dr. Holcomb as a dedicated Laser Vision Correction Center in conjunction with Emory Vision Correction Center in Atlanta. EyeCare Madison later split with Emory to establish its own Laser Correction business.

William Holcomb, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist who earned his certification in 1991. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine cum laude in 1986, then completed a 1-year medical internship at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. He followed with a 3-year ophthalmology residency at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. Specializing in cataract and refractive surgery, he began performing refractive surgery in late 1991, and in 1995 he began performing laser vision corrections. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.

EyeCare Madison is dedicated solely to laser refractive surgery, providing complete surgical candidacy exams, preoperative assessments, laser vision correction surgery (LASIK), and postoperative exams. There are many different types and brands of excimer lasers on the market used to perform LASIK. For nearsightedness, Dr. Holcomb currently prefers the Nidek EC-5000 laser for its accuracy and speed. Its "scanning slit" laser beam delivery is highly accurate and provides an extremely smooth sculpting of the cornea. For other applications, he uses the VISX 93 with its state-of-the-art eye tracking system.

Dedicated to providing the absolute best technology available, Dr. Holcomb prefers to lease his lasers rather than own them, maintaining flexibility when it comes to upgrading his technology. High quality laser vision surgery relies on expensive technology, and Dr. Holcomb strongly cautions patients not to ‘shop’ the procedure based on price alone!

In the heart of a "Tech–Driven" economy in the Huntsville area, EyeCare Madison is excited and challenged to provide the most advanced technology available in the vision correction surgery arena. Combining a conservative approach to Lasik with this technology leads to a more predictable and desirable outcome.

Dr. Holcomb and his staff are highly cognizant that not everyone who comes through the door is a good candidate for the surgery. As many as 25% of all consults are advised against the procedure. This practice leads to a higher level of confidence on the part of the patient and the doctor/staff.

For those people in the lower levels of nearsightedness, RK is still a viable option in the hands of an experienced surgeon. Dr. Holcomb performs RK in the Cullman office, but only after the patient undergoes the same rigorous preoperative assessment as the LASIK patients. All options are discussed in detail before a final decision is made for a particular patient.

For more information on LASIK or RK, please contact EyeCare Madison at (256) 461-8800 or 1-800-990-EYES.

Lee Builders, Inc.

Lee Builders

With a total of nine family members and three generations under one roof, you might suspect that Lee Builders, Inc. is a Family owned and operated business…and, you would have hit the nail on the head!

Lee Builders Inc. was established on October 17, 1984 when Jeff Lee, his brother Bruce and C.C. ‘Jack’ Lee decided to join forces. Jeff Lee owned his own construction company, Lee’s Carpentry and Construction, and his brother Bruce Lee also owned his own construction company, H. Bruce Lee Construction. The other founder is their father, C.C. ‘Jack’ Lee, who was Vice President of Thiokol Corporation and General Manager of the Huntsville Division. With the combined construction experience of Jeff and Bruce, and the financial experience Jack would contribute, they knew they had a sound base for their new company to succeed.

Initially they chose to provide a broad business base including home building, remodeling and additions, office and school remodeling and additions, and new light commercial buildings. This allowed them to capitalize on their collective experience while minimizing significant initial costs. One of Lee Builders’ basic goals was and still is, to grow slowly and consistently with stability, minus high risk. In 1987, Bob Lee joined the company as a recent mechanical engineer graduate of UAH, completing the company’s capabilities.

In 1989, they purchased 3½ acres on Fisher Street and built their new office. During 1996, they expanded the existing space to approximately 7,000 sq. ft. of office space and 10,000 sq. ft. of warehouse/storage space. By the latter part of the 90s, Lee Builders, Inc., had expanded to include larger, new construction projects of $1 to $10 million contracts for schools, churches, offices, banks, government offices/laboratories and homes. They are also an American Buildings metal building dealer and builder.

Their office is open 5 days a week from 8am to 5pm to offer you full assistance with any project. From arranging an interview and discussing your construction interests, to answering your questions, Lee Builders can take your ideas from the basement all the way up to the roof! They can also advise you of architectural firms you may use or they can take your drawings and specifications and offer a construction quote.

Lee Builders, Inc. is a financially stable and trustworthy company, capable of everything from re-hanging a door to building your new church or office. For all your construction needs, to schedule an appointment and be treated with honesty and integrity, give them a call at (256) 881-1778.

Cherokee Ridge

Cherokee RidgeConveniently located to surrounding cities, Cherokee Ridge is one mile West of US Hwy. 231 at Allen’s Crossroads. Established on August 22, 1992, they opened their doors for a round of golf on the front nine. A week later, the back nine opened for play.

Sidney L. McDonald, a businessman from Arab, AL, is the founding father of Cherokee Ridge. Starting with 545 acres, he wisely took options on the surrounding land. Adding a few acres here and there, Cherokee Ridge now reaches across 690 acres of sprawling valleys and ridges.

In the fall of 1990, Sid McDonald knew that he had to build his ‘dream development’ in the middle of this most beautiful chunk of earth. Though it might not bring an overnight return, he was certain that over time it would prove its worth.

Cherokee Ridge is a gated, private country club community offering an upscale, yet casual style of living. Vast recreational amenities include an 18-hole golf course, magnificent clubhouse and lake house, swimming, tennis and fishing. A variety of lots and ready-built homes with both golf course and mountain views are still available.

With their 10-Year Anniversary coming up in August, they are planning a Grand Re-Opening in late summer. The reopening will be partially focused on the golf course greens, which are being completely rebuilt. A new variety of bentgrass is being installed to provide the best putting conditions in the area. In addition, all the greenside bunkers will be reconfigured along with expanded teeing areas on the par three holes.

What was already one of the most challenging golf courses will become one of the most spectacular! For more information about Cherokee Ridge, please call (256) 498-5353, visit their web site at www.cherokeeridge.com, or contact them via e-mail at info@cherokeeridge.com.

Janet Lewis, Rise Real Estate

Janet LewisNOT JUST ANOTHER REALTOR

Janet Lewis has a great deal to say, and even more to offer when it comes to Real Estate. Having lived in the Huntsville/Madison area since 1965, she has witnessed the growth first hand, and many things have changed, especially Real Estate. In today’s progressive market, it takes teamwork, advertising, the Internet, communication, staging, proper pricing, & dedication to maintain a competitive edge and provide the highest level of service.

Janet knows Real Estate agents work together to meet the needs of their clients, even though they are from different companies. Sellers must work with their Realtor in a combined effort to sell their homes. Buyers also establish a working team with their Realtor. According to Janet, the days of just putting a sign in the yard are long gone. Advertising, especially where buyers and sellers can look on their own, seems to be the trend. The Internet has been especially valuable to Realtors because it allows them to give and show the most about what is available. "We put interior, as well as exterior photos on the Internet, allowing sellers the maximum exposure, and the purchasers to do some shopping online in order to best use their valuable time," says Janet.

Janet believes communication is one of the most important aspects of Real Estate. "The seller must be kept informed about what is going on with their homes, and buyers need to be understood when they describe what they want their home to be. The seller plays a key role in a purchaser choosing their home," explains Janet. "Staging is paramount to almost everything except pricing. People do not give homes away, nor do they desire to underprice them. It’s acceptable to price a home at what the market will bare as long as everything else is in place."

Janet Lewis is proud to be a Realtor in the Huntsville/Madison market. "I enjoy working with people...both buyers & sellers. Putting families into their homes is as rewarding as helping families move on to their next one," says Janet. "It is not a job for the undedicated. It is demanding and time consuming, however, I cannot imagine doing anything else."

If her philosophies meet your needs, Janet can be reached direct at 772-3000 or via e-mail at jlewis@hiwaay.net. Janet Lewis has been at Rise Real Estate for many years and is not moving any time soon!

Southern Brick

OUTSIDE THE BRICK BOX
Southern Brick Manufacturers Introduce New Looks

Here in Alabama, brick is a strong part of our heritage reflected in the homes that make up the history books of our great state. Brick, in fact, has been the building material of choice for thousands of years in civilizations dating back to the ancient Egyptians. While you may think of brick in terms of its longevity and its traditional appeal, today the brick of the past has taken on some new looks

Unlike most exterior sidings, brick has no "prepackaged" look. Its application is an art, not a science, resulting in an endless variety of appearances achieved at the talented hands of masons and creative architects. So what’s really hot in the brick world…and how has a building material that’s been around for thousands of years managed to retain its popularity?

While builders cite benefits including extended warranties (100+ years), ease of maintenance and faster turn-around on spec homes as major selling points of brick for them, once consumers decide on brick, they now have a myriad of design options available through the more than 10,000 different styles and colors of brick on the market. Some of the new products broadening the spectrum of brick home styles include: Muted Pastel Shades, Colored Mortar, Antique-Look Brick, White-Washed Brick, Rock-Shaped Brick, and Pastel Coating Systems

These new products allow homeowners to achieve styles not typically associated with brick. The popular monolithic, Mediterranean look, usually associated with stucco, is created through matching brick and mortar, or with a newly developed brick coating system. Homeowners can get the look of stone with rock-shaped brick and can take a trip back in time with the antique-look brick being produced through modern manufacturing innovations to achieve a truly authentic early American look with velvety smooth tumbled brick.

For more information on the possibilities of brick, visit the Southern Brick Institute’s web site at www.gobrick.com or visit Franklin Brick, Jenkins Brick or General Shale Brick.

Special Touch by Eunice

Eunice WalkerIt was de’ja‘ vu of the most unsettling sort that settled over Eunice Walker one day in 1987. "I had lost my sister to breast cancer when she was 35," Eunice said. And now that the irregularity which turned up in her annual mammogram had proven to be cancer, she found herself facing the same adversary. She found no one to guide her in her search for personal needs and emotional support. "With this personal experience, plus the accidental deaths of two brothers and a son, I felt I had been blessed with a ministry and purpose for my life. I could help others in their recovery."

She established Special Touch by Eunice in 1993, a business she ran from her home for several years. The business, now located at 900 Bob Wallace Avenue, Suite 106, is a full-line mastectomy boutique, dedicated to providing breast cancer patients with a warm, caring environment for both product and informational needs. The staff, consisting of Eunice, Terri Harper and Kayra Dunn, all breast cancer survivors, are certified for fitting mastectomy/lumpectomy breast forms, bras, compression sleeves and wigs. Eunice is also trained in wig customizing.

Many medical professionals refer their patients to Eunice prior to surgery, realizing that women need to know all the options in order to make an informed decision about their personal needs and desires. "I try to ease their fears," says Eunice, "because I want them to believe in their recovery and also to maintain their self-esteem as a feminine woman."

Winner of the ‘Fitter of the Month’, Eunice is profoundly spiritual and motivated as a care-giver. She is dedicated to her ministry, speaking in churches, women’s groups, businesses promoting recovery and self-esteem, and she’s looking forward to the day when a cure for cancer will enable her to happily close the doors.

You can find your answer to "Where do I go for personal needs and emotional support?" by contacting Eunice at 532-5111 or visiting her web site at www.specialtouchbyeunice.com.

"Out of adversity come the seeds of an equal or greater opportunity" says Butch Emmons, owner and President of Decorative Concrete, with regards to the opportunity he sought to build the company from a one man operation that handled advertising, sales, and the coating installation, into today’s version which relies on a team of 3 crews of professional installers capable of servicing the North Alabama area.

Peak Marketing

Rick CousinsPeak Marketing, Inc. was founded with two main goals in mind: First, to help businesses understand marketing and advertising better, and two, to assist businesses in maximizing their advertising dollars.

Peak Marketing is the brainchild of Rick Cousins (pictured). With a successful sales background in diverse media such as, television, radio, communications and marketing experience from the wholesale, consumer specialty retail and manufacturing trades, Rick felt that he possessed a knowledge of marketing and advertising that would be of great assistance to other businesses. His philosophy is simple...take care of the client and always make sure they get what they pay for.

Peak Marketing is a full service advertising agency, whose services include marketing consultation, media planning and execution, public relations, and design and production. Peak Marketing utilizes the ‘Strength in Numbers’ philosophy. In other words, when they negotiate advertising rates on the behalf of one client, it benefits them all. Thus, the more businesses that become a part of the Peak family, the better the rates are for them all.

Beyond the normal production costs, Peak Marketing’s clients pay nothing for their services. A business can typically hire Peak Marketing for no more than they are currently investing in their present advertising. These businesses can then reap the benefits of lower advertising rates, resulting in more advertising for their money. For further information or to schedule an appointment, please call (256) 489-7325 or visit their website at www.peakmarketing.biz.

Bill Penney Toyota/KiaBill Penney Toyota, Alabama’s first Toyota dealership, was founded as a used car dealership in 1946 by Mr. William Penny Sr. It later expanded to include new Studebaker-Hudson, Nash and American Motors, and finally evolved into what is known today as Bill Penney Toyota/KIA.

Committed to customer satisfaction, this dealership offers customers the highest quality new and used vehicles available. This year, the dealership obtained a very special award, the President’s Award for Excellence in Sales, Service, Customer Satisfaction, and Business Development. Several dignitaries joined them in the celebration dinner, which Mr. Jerry Penney held to honor the employees.

White Tiger Graphics

White Tiger GraphicsWhite Tiger Graphics, Inc., founded by Brad and Belynda Johnson in November of 2000, is not their first business venture. In fact, the Johnsons are the former owners of Golden Rule Printing, which they sold to Master Graphics in 1998, after 20 years in business. Mr. Johnson stated, " I thought that when we sold our first company in 1998, that we were on our way to retirement, but this business gets into your blood and sure enough, in November of 2000, we were right back in!"

White Tiger’s business plan from the beginning was to create a high end printing company to serve the local Tennessee Valley area, and to offer services and technology that were not available on a local basis. From the beginning, their vision was to have the best employees, the best equipment and offer the best service for their customers.

Their first step was to install the latest in High Quality Printing machinery. They chose to put in the best equipment on the market. Heidelberg presses are known world wide as the standard for quality printing. They also chose to install multiple size machines so that they could offer this high quality of printing in any format. To that end, they installed four printing presses ranging form a 2 color 12x18 machine all the way up to a 4 color 28x40 machine. They also had two of the machines equipped with in-line aqueous coaters to offer high gloss and dull coating capabilities to the higher end jobs that they produce.

In addition, they also equipped their bindery with the latest in high-speed equipment, also from Heidelberg. White Tiger Graphics, Inc. has the capacity to fold and bind 250,000 books a day if required. Their focus in the bindery was to have the most efficient equipment available in order to offer a quality product at a reasonable price. This has enabled them to lead the area in finishing technology.

In June of 2001, White Tiger Graphics, Inc. took another step and installed the only computer-to-plate system in North Alabama. The goal was to convert their conventional pre-press department to a totally digital work flow by the end of the year. Brad Johnson is proud to note that not only have they made this transition, but it has also been well received by all of their clients. This new technology enables them to get jobs to press in half the time, and achieves a quality level that is not obtainable with conventional methods. This new technology is time saving and economical for both their customers and the company’s bottom line.

Though their first year has been a wild ride, they have exceeded every goal originally set and are anticipating an excellent year of growth in 2002 within the three specific market segments they have developed: Commercial Sales Division, Federal Contracts Division and Media Division.

White Tiger Graphics, located at 351-G Electronics Boulevard in Huntsville, has a friendly and knowledgeable staff of 42 employees ready to assist you with your company’s next print job. Contact them at (256) 704-5333 or visit their web site at www.whitetigeronline.com for further information.

Meagan, "Wish Child"
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alabama, founded in 1987, is one of eighty national and twenty international chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. Their mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Nationwide, Make-A-Wish Foundation Chapters have granted over 83,000 wishes since their inception in 1980. They solely depend on the donations of individuals, businesses and civic groups to support its mission. The local office is located at 911 Big Cove Road, second floor, Huntsville.

The local chapter of Make-A-Wish Foundation, through its staff and volunteers, fulfills special wishes of more than 210 critically ill children and their families each year. One of their recent recipients was a girl named Megan. Sixteen-year-old Megan, who suffers from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, recently received a computer with all of the trimmings. Volunteers traveled to Megan’s home in Waterloo, Alabama, to present her with a Compaq computer with Internet access, a printer, desk, chair and software accessories. This was even more special, as she was preparing to leave for St. Jude’s Hospital for a month on February 13th. Megan was so excited, that she even agreed to share her computer with her fifteen-year-old brother, Joshua. Several volunteers and companies in the North Alabama community helped make Megan’s wish a reality, including Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Cullman, Sam’s Club in Huntsville and the employees from the CompUSA store in Huntsville.

There are many children in need of having their ‘wishes’ come true and fortunately, many ways in which people and companies can participate in helping. Sponsor a Wish... with a donation of $5,000, a dream can become reality. Become a volunteer... Volunteers assist with fundraising, special event planning, office assistance and Wish volunteers. Organize a Special Event... dozens of companies sponsor anything from bake sales, parties, sporting events to dress-down days. Enhance a Wish. Enhancements are items that add to the magic of a wish and include backpacks, travel games, mouse pads, blank disks or desk sets. Donate Miles to a Child... donating $250.00 will purchase one airline ticket for a child who has a travel wish, or you can even donate your frequent flyer miles and you will help to defray the cost of more than 1,000 tickets needed for wishes this year. You will find more information on donating your frequent flyer miles check at www.wish.org.
