Customer Service is Our State of Mind

For Southern Stone Design (SSD), customer service is a state of mind. Owners Danny Hallum and Joel Robertson started the company in February 2005 with customer service as its main focus and foremost in operating the business. With phenomenal growth during the past two years, SSD continues to put its clients first and, in return, has seen tremendous growth. "Customer service is not just a saying at Southern Stone Design," Hallum states. "It’s our state of mind and the driving force behind everything we do. Everything we do is for our customers."

Hallum instills this philosophy in all of his staff members and realizes it will separate his business from other granite companies. "Our customer service is the core strength of our company," he comments. "It’s what let’s me sleep at night. We stress doing it right and being friendly. We are going to go out of our way to make customers happy."

Hallum continues, "We do what we say and do it well. You’re not just another kitchen to us; you’re a customer. It’s not just about volume; it’s about serving individual people. I want us to serve people that desire good customer service with a great product at a fair price."

As SSD continues to serve customers with top-notch service, it has grown to be the largest granite fabricator in North Alabama. SSD recently outgrew their original facility, which led them to open their new 21,000 square-foot fabrication facility with a separate Design Center. "All of our growth can be summarized into the goal of providing our customers with quality products in a timely manner," Hallum states. "We didn’t go into this new facility because we wanted to be big, but because we’re growing to service our customers better."

In the new fabrication facility, SSD can process more than 1,800 square feet of natural stone and quartz and perform installations on 18 kitchens in a week. There are numerous pieces of new and state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Rotex CAD automated saw, as well as software that allows SSD to provide the best products more efficiently. This facility features office space for the employees, separate areas to house stone and tile, a "green" water purification system, an overhead crane system for moving stone, an indoor loading area, 31 tables for cutting and polishing up to18 pieces at one time, and a bridge saw and software that streamlines the entire facility’s procedures. "Our entire system runs on an integrated, computerized program that allows full communication throughout the company," Hallum explains. "The salesperson will place orders online, which is tied into the software package used company-wide. If a customer wants to make any changes to their order, all the departments will know immediately. Plus, the customer can track their order online. Our modernization brings the quality of our products to an even higher level."

Another innovative process that SSD is implementing is using a laser template system to template the customer’s kitchen. "We simply come in, take measurements with the laser to create a template, transfer this information to the CAD system, and then, after the stone is selected, start the job," Hallum explains. "This greatly improves our efficiency and customers appreciate that nothing is torn out until we are ready for installation."

The new, separate Design Center, located at 501 D Church Street (in downtown Huntsville), offers customers a place to come and design their own kitchens. "We want to provide our customers with the best overall experience with granite in town," Hallum says. "Our Design Center offers customers a place to look at all their options in a clean and quiet setting without all the dust and dirt from the fabrication facility."

Staying true with the company’s philosophy of providing the best for its customers, SSD only works with Grade A, 3cm-thick, high-end quality slab material from Italy, Brazil, and Africa. Available quartz products are Hanstone, Ceasarstone, and Zodiaq. These brands of quartz materials are developed by industry leaders and offer beauty without sacrificing strength and
durability.

Along with using top-quality materials, SSD is locally-owned, hires locally, and does all of its own work from sales to fabrication to installation. "We are locally owned and operated," Hallum explains. "We do all of our own work and never use subcontractors. We hire local and legal workers, and 95% of our employees are local talent."

SSD services a variety of markets, such as spec-home builders, custom-home builders, interior designers, decorators, and individual retail customers. Some of the builders SSD works with include Mark Harris Homes, D.R. Horton, Killian Homebuilders, Viking Construction, Castle Construction, Mitchell Homebuilders, and Matrix Homes. SSD is licensed and insured and is a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Builder’s Association, the Morgan County Homebuilder’s Association, the North Alabama Better Business Bureau, and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. SSD provided stonework for the Fall 2007 Parade of Homes Showcase Home in McMullen Cove.

SSD’s success is a direct reflection of the support it has received from its customers, vendors, and the Huntsville community. "We are very thankful to the local market for supporting us," Hallum states. "It is extremely important that we get the message out that we want to be the best granite company in North Alabama, because this is my home city and my home market. Customer service is not just something we say we do; it’s our state of mind."

SSD is proud to support local charities including Special Olympics and Huntsville Police charities. SSD is a presenting sponsor of the Meg Ingram Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament, May 8th at Hampton Cove Golf Course. Raffle tickets for up to $7,500 in granite countertops are available at the Southern Stone Design fabrication shop. For more information, please go to www.megingram.org

Simply the Best in a Growing Market

Woodland Homes of Huntsville continues to set new sales records and remains a financially strong corporation. After setting sales records in 2007 and experiencing a 43% growth in first-quarter sales this year, Woodland Homes is positioned as the front-runner of the building community in Madison County. And, in addition to strong growth, Woodland Homes continues to receive many local and national accolades.

The most recent honor Woodland Homes received in 2007 was the Axispointe Award in Post-Construction Excellence. As one of 1,200 builders nationwide participating in this program, Woodland Homes received this award in its first year of participation. “This award is an honor because this means we’re satisfying our customers in the buying process, construction process, and most importantly, in the care they receive after closing,” owner Mike Friday states.

To go along with the Axispointe Award, Woodland Homes has also moved up in the Fastest Growing Homebuilder in the Nation list from Builders Magazine. In the 2007 Fast Track listing, the magazine has recognized Woodland Homes for the fifth consecutive year and has advanced the company to #54. Also reflecting Woodland Homes’ strength in the community is the 2007 Small Business of the Year Award presented to Woodland Homes by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. “This award is powerful in the community because it recognizes that we are an established and professional company with which to do business,” Friday says. “This is an invaluable award because it solidifies our goals to be Simply the Best.” In addition to the Chamber’s Small Business Award, Woodland Homes won the “Excellence is Not Optional” award from Alabama A&M University last year, and has won four years in a row in the annual Parade of Homes sponsored by the Huntsville-Madison County Builders Association.

Woodland Homes is noted for its innovative community and housing designs, as well as using technology that adds value to homes. This value is the reason Woodland Homes homeowners are seeing a substantial appreciation of their homes after just two years with some appreciation as high as $60,000. “Woodland Homes has a consistent vision for developing its communities and benefiting its customers,” Friday says. “We have folks buying their third and fourth homes with us. REALTORS are also seeing the value of selling our houses. They recognize that our name is synonymous with quality.”

With 10 communities, Woodland Homes offers a full range of housing options from $150,000 town homes to $2 million lake homes.

In its continuing effort to offer simply the best for customers, Woodland Homes now offers a new Dream Studio and Sales Information Center. This facility provides an informative and pleasant environment for customers to make all their design selections. “Our new Dream Studio has all the bells and whistles to assist customers, and makes the selection process enjoyable and simple,” Friday states. “They can see and touch products and use our plasma touch screens to make selections. We guide them through decisions about the features in their homes by listening and providing them with options.”

Woodland Homes provides Integrity and Quality with the best service and products. “I expect my team to perform with flawless execution as we continue building toward the future with Simply the Best communities,” Friday concludes.

In addition, it is in the forefront in the use of technology to meet and serve newcomers to the area. The company is positioned to make its services available in the old-fashioned way of person-to-person or through the Internet by way of their web site. Rosenblum Realty also participates in the mailings to all potential newcomers to Madison County sent by the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

The company is fully equipped to secure the right home for each family, couple, or single person…whether clients are searching for an existing home, a brand-new home, or a rental home to satisfy their immediate needs. Rosenblum Realty stands ready with its trained staff to go to work for their clients to solve their real estate needs.

Rosenblum Realty realizes that helping others build for the future and supporting others in dealing with the present enhances the quality of life for everyone. With deep roots in the history of Huntsville-Madison County, Rosenblum Realty is dedicated to serving and enhancing the welfare of the community and its people. In keeping with the National Association of REALTORS commitment to reach out and push for affordable housing for everyone, the staff of Rosenblum Realty in recent years has become quite active in volunteering for local Habitat for Humanity projects. They are willing to give their time and money to see that affordable housing is available for many would-be homeowners in Madison County. This effort has given the Rosenblum Realty staff the opportunity to make possible the dream of home ownership available to even more local families.

Another worthwhile cause that the Rosenblum Realty staff supports is the local Muscular Dystrophy Association. The company has participated in the "Jailbird Lock-Up" program for a number of years and, as Carey Rosenblum, Broker, says, "This is an exciting and fun way of raising money for a great cause. At Rosenblum Realty, we have a social conscience backed up by commitment. By giving back to the community and supporting the physically challenged and the underprivileged in our community, we all benefit."

Rosenblum Realty is proud of the effort and conscientious service of each of its agents. It takes lots of hard work and patience coupled with extensive training to successfully produce the desired results. The company knows that its reputation rests squarely on the shoulders of its representatives. Rosenblum Realty salutes all of its agents and their efforts to serve the community and their clients.

George Hardin came to Rosenblum Realty after a career in wholesale food sales. George dealt with various managers and department heads in many grocery establishments and learned the successful tools of patience, persistence, and follow-up. He is diligent in his efforts and very likeable to work with. Client Kay McDaniels states, "I recently sold a home and purchased another home in the Huntsville area with George’s assistance. I am very happy to have George as my REALTOR. He is the most honest, professional, and hard-working REALTOR that I have had the privilege to work with, and the only REALTOR that I plan to use in the future. He was very patient and supportive in finding the perfect place for me. I have referred George to other friends who are looking to sell or purchase a home. I have let them know that they will be working with the best REALTOR in the Huntsville and Madison County market."

Patti Weaver and Paula Lindsey are sisters that partnered a year ago to launch a career in real estate. They had worked together previously in retail sales, management, and bookkeeping. They are fun to work with and take the interest of their clients to heart. Client Ryan Livingston says, "I was very pleased at how well everything went with my house buying experience and how professional Patti and Paula were. I learned some things about the house buying process that I had not learned with previous agents. I’m very satisfied with everything they both did for me and I feel like they both had my best interests in mind. Patti and Paula made my experience a positive one and I will certainly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a REALTOR."

White's Refrigeration* Posted 4/21/08

Providing Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Installation, Service and Repairs for 52 years

For 52 years, White’s Refrigeration has been providing the Tennessee Valley with refrigeration, air conditioning and heating installation, service, and repair to commercial and residential clients. Founder, John White, started the business in 1956 and based the family business on the key principles of excellence, honesty, and reliability. In 1982, John passed the business to his son, Brian. Brian believes his father’s business principles reflect the company’s success.

One recent commercial project White’s Refrigeration completed was for Star Market in Huntsville’s historic Five Points area. White’s Refrigeration installed a commercial-grade computerized refrigeration system, along with all new refrigeration cases designed to provide the highest standards in quality and efficiency. Installed were 70 feet of fresh meat and seafood display cases, 84 feet of fresh produce display, 12 feet of bakery display, 20 feet of beer and wine display, 48 feet of dairy display, 8 feet of fresh pizza display, 90 feet of frozen food display cases, a new refrigerated fresh meat cutting room, and six walk in cooler/freezer combinations.

The Star Market in Five Points is a Huntsville landmark that opened its doors in 1944. In 1999, the store was purchased by Darden Heritage and the friendly service and neighborhood appeal that is the store’s trademark was extended to additional stores in Madison and Meridianville. All of the stories offer full grocery services and a pharmacy. Recently, the Five Points location was expanded and modernized to 14,000 square feet without a disruption in services.

Darden Heritage, owner, says, "This renovation was an extensive and orchestrated effort with White’s Refrigeration handling all of our complex refrigeration installations. It was truly a balancing act to keep all of the old units running while new units were being installed. Brian White and I have worked together for years. He has always done—and will continue to do—the repairs and service on all of the Star Market refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment. He and his staff are very reliable. The thing about Brian is that throughout the process here at the Five Points store he was always forward thinking and looking after my bottom line. He listens to you, he tells you what he needs, and he talks out the solution with you. Brian is easy to work with and he is real conscientious. I have been very pleased with White’s Refrigeration’s work here."

When a customer experiences a problem with an HVAC unit, White’s Refrigeration goes on location with three goals: to thoroughly inspect the HVAC system to determine all of the problems, to communicate with the customer and show them the problems, and to repair the unit in the manner decided upon by the client. "We do not want to just install a part that takes care of one problem and then leave," Brian explains. "We want to make the customer aware of all the problems with the unit and then have the customer tell us which avenue of repair they want us to take."

With 52 years of commercial and residential expertise in the HVAC industry, White’s Refrigeration, along with its Carrier products, truly is an expert in its field.

White’s Refrigeration’s Preventive Maintenance Agreement (PMA): In order to assist clients in efficiently maintaining HVAC systems and identifying problems before they become major expenses, the professional and well-trained staff at White’s Refrigeration offers a Planned Maintenance Agreement. "Our Service Staff, performing a PMA on your HVAC system, is designed to save you, the customer, money in the long run," Brian White comments. "If your HVAC system is operating properly, it will function at its highest efficiency and thereby save you monthly on your utility bills. Additionally, a PMA will prolong the life of your HVAC system. If your HVAC system breaks on a Sunday, we will come out and fix it at no additional charge."

The PLANNED MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT (PMA) provides:

  • Prolonged HVAC system life—and "peace of mind"—through a complete year-round maintenance program.

  • A properly running HVAC system functioning at its highest efficiency—thereby saving money.

  • A 10% parts discount on any repairs made during the year.

  • Scheduled service twice a year – spring and fall.

  • Preferred status on all service and/or emergency calls with no overtime charges on labor.

Chef's Table* Posted 4/23/08

Gourmet Tapas Dining

Chef’s Table is a truly unique, locally-owned dining experience where patrons can share "small plates", good wine, and a variety of traditional and inspired culinary creations. Owners Aunia and Tom Chapman opened Chef’s Table in November 2000 to bring a gourmet Tapas dining style to Huntsville. Tapas are Spanish in origin and initially featured by many local bars. Tapas at Chef’s Table are small food portions featuring eclectic flavors from many cultures. With this type of menu selection, friends are encouraged to share and "enjoy a little bit of it all".

Tapas has evolved into a full-fledged dining experience at Chef’s Table with the combination of exquisite food, excellent wines, and friendly service from dedicated owners and staff members. Aunia grew up in the restaurant business and worked for her mother, Sonja Schrader, who founded, owns, and manages Old Heidelberg and Café Berlin in Huntsville. After graduating from college, her mother called her back to the business in 1991. "My mother told me I owed her one year of life in exchange for my college education and asked me to manage at Café Berlin," she states.

In 1992, Aunia opened the next Schrader family restaurant…Tortellini’s. Tortellini’s was Huntsville’s first upscale Northern Italian restaurant and was successful with menu service and off-site catering. In 1996, Tom began work at the restaurant. Over the years he honed his culinary skills by studying under successful chefs, such as Roland Coulombe of NYC, and Andy Howery of Huntsville. Over time, Aunia and Tom became good friends and decided to join together in business, as well as share their lives together.

Aunia and Tom’s desire to bring something new to Huntsville led to them opening Chef’s Table. Their gourmet restaurant features Asian Chicken, Potato-crusted Mahi Mahi, and Lamb Chops with Mint Pepper Jelly, in addition to mouth-watering desserts. The restaurant has an extensive, reasonably priced wine list with one featured wine per month. Chef’s Table also hosts monthly themed wine dinners featuring food dishes paired with the wines and, during the warm months, Chef’s Table hosts "Tuesdays on the Patio" featuring new wines with appetizers on their cozy patio.

From Sunday through Thursday, the Chef’s Table facility is available for corporate or personal events. In addition, it provides off-site catering services for 20 to 400 guests. "I provide a consultation to help clients determine what foods they want to serve," Aunia states. "We offer full-service set-up and clean-up, full staff with servers and bartenders, and I personally oversee each event."

Aunia and Tom truly enjoy the profession they are in. "In order to be in this business, you have to love it and that’s exactly how we feel," she says. "The greatest thing to us at the end of the day is knowing how many people we’ve made happy."

Tom adds, "Chef’s Table is unique in many facets, primarily because we’re always here, that we project a family atmosphere, we are accessible, and that we care about our guests. We want guests to not just go out to dinner, but instead have a great experience."

For a truly unique dining experience, visit Chef’s Table to share and "enjoy a little bit of it all"!

Fowler Auction and Real Estate Service*  Posted 3/24/08

Celebrating 30 Years of SUCCESS and Helping People

Going once…going twice…sold! These are words that changed the life of President/Founder and Auctioneer Mickey Fowler 30 years ago. "It’s been a short 30 years," Mickey says. "I don’t know where the time has gone, but we have been blessed. Since we started in 1978, our business has increased every year."

In the late 1970s, Mickey was struggling financially like many Tennessee Valley farmers when he found his niche as an auctioneer. Mickey began auctioning off farm equipment and quickly acquired the trust and respect of local farmers. As time passed, real estate became Mickey’s featured venue, and today, over 90% of Fowler’s auctions focus on real estate.

What has stayed the same since 1978 is the exceptional service and personal attention Fowler Auction gives to clients. "We have built a clientele in which our business is mainly repeat business," Mickey states. "And often they are different generations of the same family."

Fowler Auction and Real Estate (FARE) has helped clients from all over the Southeast obtain the most for their property with full-service auction services for residential and personal property, business liquidations, and commercial, industrial, and farm equipment. Chief Financial Officer Betsye Fowler Spencer says, "Fowler Auction does more residential real estate auctions today than five years ago because banks are more acquainted today with the professional auction method of sales."

Despite national concerns about the real estate market, the Tennessee Valley continues to be a good market. "Land prices in our region have increased 50% in the last year and over 100% in the last five years," Mickey comments. "Prices have gone up and that has enticed people to offer their land for sale. Auctions ALWAYS bring more money for undeveloped land. Why? Because land is getting scarce and land is a rare commodity."

Mickey prides himself on assembling the best staff in the Southeast. In addition to eight full-time administrative and support staff, the Fowler team includes nine auctioneers: Mickey Fowler, Keith McDaniel, Joe Maddox, Harold Fowler, Charlie Thorpe, Steve Butler, Daniel Culps, Bill Smith, and Jay Lockridge. "Every one of them is just as good as gold," Fowler says. "You can’t find a better staff of employees than we’ve put together. They’re all sincere about their jobs and want everything to be done just right."

As Fowler Auction and Real Estate celebrates its 30th anniversary, Mickey and his staff look forward to the next 30 years. Shane Odom, Fowler Auction and Real Estate COO, says, "Over the past 30 years, Fowler Auction has been known in the community as trustworthy and honest. During this time, the public has come to see Mickey as the man who knows real estate. If you look back from when he started with the farm equipment, you can see how we’ve evolved to primarily real estate, which is now our main focus. Our ultimate goal is to become the preferred auction company in the Southeast and our vision is to be better today than we were yesterday. We are accomplishing these goals because of the great team we have in place. We want to take that 30 and turn it into 60."

Custom Cuts Professional Outdoor Services*  Posted 1/17/08

Serving its Clients with Dedication and Excellence

For Owner Jimmy Stubbs of Custom Cuts Professional Outdoor Services it’s about giving clients the best service through dedication and excellence. For five years, Jimmy has been providing top-quality professional lawn and landscaping services for residential and commercial services in the Tennessee Valley. During the spring and summer months, Jimmy and his staff offer services, such as lawn maintenance, installation and service for irrigation systems, landscaping options with sod and total lawn renovations, and specialized seasonal services that include dethatching.

"My background in the lawn care industry allows us to provide these specialized services, such as dethatching," Jimmy says. "Dethatching is the process of removing old grass clippings that are in the lawn. Lawns that can grow better and benefit from this process include Bermuda and Zoysia."

Two other specialty-landscaping services that Custom Cuts Professional Outdoor Services offers are sod placement and irrigation systems. With sod, Custom Cuts Professional Outdoor Services performs every aspect of the process, such as excavating to the level of soil, laying the sod, and reusing the existing topsoil. The company will also bring in extra topsoil if necessary and ensures that the lawn is thriving by coming back once a week for the first few weeks to check on its progress. "We make sure that the sod is doing well by stopping by and checking on the lawn," he explains. "If we notice anything, we’ll talk with the client to make sure the process is going smoothly."

After the company installs the sod or the irrigation system, Jimmy and his crew provide monthly maintenance packages that can be tailored to the residential or commercial client’s needs. The monthly maintenance contracts are based on a 12-month period that typically includes services such as mowing, trimming shrubs, pulling weeds, and replacing annual flowers with seasonal colors.

In addition to the convenient monthly invoicing, Custom Cuts Professional Outdoor Services sets itself apart with professional attire and equipment. "When we meet with a new client, we provide them with a written estimate then provide a written contract with what services will be included on a monthly basis," Jimmy states. "The crew is dressed professionally with a standard company shirt and the trucks have our information on them so our clients know we mean business." Jimmy also provides each crewmember with a client notebook that contains the contracts so the crew knows what needs to be done at clients’ locations.

What’s important to Jimmy is giving thanks to his dedicated customers and going above and beyond to exceed their expectations. This past summer, Jimmy realized how important saying thanks is because of a near fatal accident that left Jimmy with a broken back and crushed nerves in his legs. "Since the accident, I’ve realized how important my family is," he explains. "I’m very blessed to be here and I just want to thank our clients that have stuck with me through this difficult time. Their support and dedication to our business and family means a lot to us."

Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction*
Posted 4/1/08

The Best and the Safest Choice

Lewis and Son Roofing & Construction, an established, family owned and operated business, has been serving customers in Madison County for more than 50 years. Proud to offer services throughout Central and Northern Alabama and Southern and Central Tennessee, Lewis and Son has a solid commitment to doing the job right and standing behind the job, making the company the best and safest choice for your roofing and remodeling needs.

JL Lewis founded Lewis and Son in 1956, and his son, Shane, currently serves as president. "My dad started serving Madison County homeowners as a teenager supervising a crew of men and he is still actively involved in the business everyday," Shane explains. "I had the privilege of growing up in the business. With my father’s guidance, the solid professional team that assists us, and a definite plan for quality growth, we have added residential and commercial remodeling to our provided services and expanded our work area. We are truly a single source remodeler that homeowners can trust and rely on."

Lewis and Son is the number one roofing company in the region and has the qualifications to prove it. Lewis and Son’s business is the only roofing contractor headquartered in Huntsville that holds the status of GAF-Elk Master Elite roofing contractor. In order to become a factory-certified GAF-Elk Master Elite roofing contractor, a business must prove they are fully licensed in its state, are adequately insured, have a proven reputation for providing quality roofing services throughout the community, and are committed to ongoing professional training to ensure quality installation. Because of GAF-Elk’s stringent standards, only the top 3% of all roofing contractors qualify as Master Elite contractors.

A major part of the top-notch services provided by Lewis and Son is the use of high-quality GAF-Elk roofing products. "The products we use are the highest quality, well-known, and have outstanding warranties," Shane states. "Plus, we purchase these products locally from ABC Supplies."

Founded in 1886, GAF-Elk is North America’s largest manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing products. Professional installers, Lewis and Son included, have long preferred the rugged, dependable performance that only a GAF-Elk roof can offer, which has made it the #1 brand in North America.

Lewis and Son uses Timberline High Definition Shingles, which are shingles invented by GAF-Elk that are the number one selling architectural shingle in North America. The Timberline shingles are nearly 60% thicker than standard architectural shingles and come in a variety of patented, high-definition color blends for a smart combination of safety and style.

Beneath the high-quality Timberline shingles, Lewis and Son protects roofs from leaks with GAF-Elk Storm Guard Film-Surfaced Leak Barrier. This extra step creates a 100% watertight seal that keeps water out of even the most vulnerable areas of roofing.

To protect roofs from deterioration, Lewis and Son uses the GAF-Elk Cobra Rigid Vent II Exhaust Vent for roof ridges. This product provides effective attic ventilation, which is critical for a long-lasting roof. Additionally, this ventilation helps extend the life of exterior paint, safeguards attic possessions against mildew, guards against ice damage on the roof, and may reduce heating and air conditioning costs.

Lewis and Son also builds and installs seamless, custom-made gutters.

All of these GAF-Elk products used by Lewis and Son come with the Golden Pledge Ltd. Warranty, one of the strongest and safest roof warranties in the country. The Golden Pledge offers a 100% coverage period on material defects and workmanship and includes an exclusive 40-point factory inspection of the completed roof. The warranty also includes "peace of mind" with its coverage on winds up to 130 mph, free warranty transferability, and a Good Housekeeping guarantee on the entire roofing system.

In addition to these outstanding roofing products, Lewis and Son also uses the best in remodeling products. The James Hardie Siding products are dimensionally stable, composed of Portland cement, ground sand, cellulose fiber, select additives, and water (no asbestos, glass fibers or formaldehyde additives). These James Hardie fiber-cement products resist damage caused by extended exposure to moisture, humidity, and salt air. The products also come with a limited, transferable warranty for 50 years to resist cracking, rotting, and delamination.

Lewis and Son installs Simonton Windows, rated highest in the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Residential Window and Patio Door Builder and Remodeler Satisfaction Study. Simonton’s Reflections 5500 windows are among the most thermally efficient products with insulating glass units, are low E/Argon-filled glass, and have ProSolar architectural-grade, soft-coat low E glass from PPG. Simonton Windows has become an ENERGY STAR partner to help homeowners choose the best system for their needs and ranks highest in warranty and repair service, timeliness, and accuracy of delivery, price, and satisfaction.

Also installed by Lewis and Son is TREX decking and railing. Known for its elegance and reliability, TREX decks and railings are low maintenance, natural looking and feeling, safe, and have a 25-year, limited residential warranty.

"Lewis and Son is a single source for all of your roofing and remodeling needs," Shane states. "We never sub-contract our work. All products are installed by our staff, and all of our employees are covered by $1 million in Workmen’s Compensation Insurance and $2 million in General Liability Insurance."

Shane continues, "As our five decade-plus company history of service in this region shows, customer satisfaction is very important to us. Because of our professionalism and quality products, people often call us after a wind or hail storm to fix their roof and then decide to ask us to remodel their home. We are very honored, and humbled, to be the largest residential roofing company in Northern Alabama!"

With more than 50 years of experience, Lewis and Son offers customers the best and safest choice for all roofing and remodeling needs. Shane says, "People want a professional service and they have recognized that Lewis and Son does a professional job—every time!"

Mr. Electric® of Huntsville Promotes National Electrical Safety Month – May 2008

Franchise Owner and licensed Electrical Contractor Keith Pinkerton of Mr. Electric of Huntsville is committed to all facets of electrical safety. With May being National Electrical Safety Month, Mr. Electric focuses on promoting safety for all of its employees and customers.

Mr. Electric is a national franchise of The Dwyer Group of Waco, TX that Pinkerton purchased in November 2003. Over the years, Pinkerton has received accolades for his accomplishments within the organization, such as the Excellence in Leadership award in 2006. Also that year, Mr. Electric of Huntsville was the #3 franchise out of 146 in the United States.

The company offers a variety of electrical services, such as repairing, installing, and replacing ceiling fans, recessed lighting, electrical plugs, electrical panels, holiday lighting, and security or landscaped lighting. Mr. Electric also does electrical remodeling for an entire house or a home addition with its dedicated remodeling crew. Additionally, a 24/7-emergency service through an on-call service professional is available.

Currently, the company has 12 service professionals and 10 trucks on the road daily. Each service professional has extensive electrical knowledge, wears a Mr. Electric franchise uniform, displays a Mr. Electric of Huntsville picture ID, and goes through regular training.

Pinkerton and Mr. Electric are truly dedicated to electrical safety. Mr. Electric technicians use a 12-point electrical inspection that includes checking items to ensure they are working properly outside and inside the home. This inspection includes the main meter panel’s breakers and disconnects, accessible kitchen receptacles, lighting fixtures, exhaust fans, laundry area electrical system, electric to the HVAC system, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, proper surge protection, and safety and security lighting.

"Mr. Electric is committed to safety in general, and we do this through different processes, such as drug-testing, running background checks, and badging our employees to providing an electrical inspection in clients’ homes to on-going training for our employees," Pinkerton explains. "We are dedicated to ensuring the homeowner is safe."

In addition to practicing its own electrical safety standards, Mr. Electric promotes the guidelines created by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), which sponsors the National Electrical Safety Month each May. Founded in 1994 through a joint effort between Underwriters Laboratories Inc., the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the ESFI is North America’s only nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home and workplace. It’s a 501 (c) (3) organization funded by the electrical manufacturers and distributors, independent testing laboratories, utilities, safety and consumer groups, and trade and labor associations. The National Electrical Safety Month promotes public education campaigns and proactive media relations to help reduce property damage, personal injury and death due to electrical accidents.

Mr. Electric of Huntsville and ESFI suggest the following tips for electrical safety: never take electricity for granted, protect yourself, and follow equipment safety rules. "Mr. Electric is a group of trained professionals who desire to provide the high quality of service our customers deserve," Pinkerton says. "We are committed to the safety of our customers and focus on repairing electrical problems and installing efficient electrical systems."

"AllSouth gives customers an unbiased comparison of the best product brands because we sell them all," Co-founder Tyler Hillman says. AllSouth is a regional family owned business with Josh Hillman as the other co-founder and their father, John, as the Madison store manager. The company has multiple locations in Alabama and is the only dealer in North Alabama with brands such as Viking, Sub Zero Wolf, Electrolux Icon, Dacor, GE Monogram, Miele, DCS and even the AGA product line, all under one roof. Plus, with our own trained staff, we also install and service all brands we sell."

Kitchen & Bath Concepts Posted 3/22/08

The True Meaning of "Custom" Cabinets

For some people, the meaning of "custom" cabinets might be handmade cabinets constructed in a small shop or on-site. But to Kitchen & Bath Concepts (KBC), "custom" cabinets means providing top-quality cabinets with "custom" design, "custom" fit, and "custom" installation to meet each customer’s specific needs and desires. Owner Jeff Durbin, a third-generation carpenter and cabinetmaker, started KBC in 1987. Originally, the company built high-end cabinetry, but in 1998 KBC transitioned over to providing high-quality, custom factory cabinetry from nationally recognized and long-established manufacturers.

Jeff decided to transition from making cabinets to purchasing factory cabinets because he realized that manufacturer’s cabinets were just as good (but usually more strongly and precisely built), were finished with more complete and extensive processes, had excellent warranties, offered quick turnaround times, and had great pricing. "I felt it was a great way to offer customers more value for their dollar," he states. "These cabinets are backed by me and by our national manufacturers. And our companies always stand behind their products."

He continues, "The word ‘custom’ can be deceiving. Some people might think custom is better than factory built. That is not the case. With factory built cabinets, we can provide precise cabinet depth, width, height, color, etc., and many other benefits. There really is nothing we can’t do with our products that a ‘custom’ guy could do! We provide custom design, custom fit, and custom installation. The outstanding warranties provided by our companies, along with the high-quality construction of our factory cabinets and the fact that they meet and exceed the industry standards established by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, give us a definite edge. Plus, our pricing is exceptional. We are very competitive with cabinet makers and we always beat the big box stores and direct clubs in price, quality and service."

The manufacturer’s cabinets provided by KBC are specially and specifically built for each individual customer. These cabinets have finished interiors, adjustable shelves, durable construction features, one year to lifetime warranties, and go through a 12-15 step finishing process in a "clean" facility. Additionally, the cabinets undergo continual quality inspections designed to meet industry standards and the customer’s expectations.

KBC is a member of the Huntsville-Madison County Builders Association, the Remodeler’s Council, and the National Kitchen and Bath Association. A few of the manufacturer lines provided by KBC are Omega Cabinetry, Dynasty Cabinetry, Wards Cabinetry, Medallion Cabinetry, Shiloh Cabinetry, Decora Cabinetry, Diamond Cabinetry, and Marsh Cabinetry. Some of the business clients that KBC serves include Stricklin Custom Homes, Malone & Whitehead Custom Homes, Southern Spaces, and Bluestone.

For KBC, the true meaning of "custom" cabinets focuses on providing quality cabinets that fit each client’s individual tastes and needs. "All we do is cabinets," Jeff says. "For us, ‘custom’ means specially designed, built, and installed for you. Our focus is on quality. We are redefining the true meaning of ‘custom’ cabinets."

Auntie M's Antiques & Interiors*  Posted 2/27/08

From Bedroom…to Boardroom

From the bedroom to the boardroom, Auntie M’s Southern Antiques & Interiors can make it feel like there’s no place like home. Owner Margaret Nell Fowler offers commercial and residential decorating services in the Tennessee Valley area and prides herself on listening to clients and giving them the best service and products.

One recent commercial client, Dr. Michael Dohrenwend, states, "Margaret Nell listened to the needs of my staff in order to create a functional, as well as beautiful office environment. My patients feel comfortable coming into a warm and inviting atmosphere."

Margaret Nell put her magic touch to work by bringing Dr. Dohrenwend’s 1980s building with dark paneling and outdated plumbing into this millennium with new paint, window treatments, carpet, wiring, nursing and reception stations, and telephone and security systems. In addition, she enhanced the outside landscaping, added parking lot lighting, and created two examination rooms with vintage items. "We wanted to create a place people enjoyed coming into," Margaret Nell explains. "It’s now beautiful, as well as functional."

A top priority for Margaret Nell is form and functionality. "Form and function go hand-in-hand with commercial decorating," she comments. "I sit down with clients to find out what they need, like, and will make their job easier. We then create something they’ll be proud of and comfortable working in."

What sets Margaret Nell apart is her drive to learn every aspect of a job and her hands-on approach. If she is unfamiliar with something, she researches every aspect to make sure she meets the client’s needs. Also, Margaret Nell assists in design plans and hires and oversees sub-contractors for necessary construction services. "I offer the total package," Margaret Nell says. "My services cover the construction or remodeling of an area to the selection and placement of the smallest details that make your space unique and personal."

Margaret Nell uses this same philosophy with residential clients. A recent client, Mrs. Reasoner, states, "I returned from a vacation very nervous to see what I would find in my home that was being redone by Margaret Nell. We had selected colors, fabrics, and made other basic decisions, but I left her in charge of the moving and mess required to put in the hardwood floors, paint walls, and create custom window treatments. Wow! I walked into a new house with furniture and pictures rearranged, and beautiful floors and windows that made my home a more pleasant place to be."

Another service Margaret Nell offers is shopping for furniture and antiques. "I want my clients to have top-quality furniture at a good price," Margaret Nell comments. "I’ll travel the Southeast to find items that fulfill clients’ dreams."

She continues, "Antiques are 100 years old or older. Vintage pieces are often referred to as antiques and can be equally pleasing to have in homes or offices. As long as clients select an item that they’re comfortable with, ‘works in their space’, and has quality and character, then we’re pleased. The items I find for my clients aren’t the most inexpensive, but always have value and beauty."

From the bedroom to the boardroom, there’s no place like home with Auntie M’s decorating services.

Duell Law Firm, LLC*  Posted 4/22/08

Entertainment & Arts Law Practice

Attorney Marcus Hunt of the Duell Law Firm (photo) has established a unique legal practice that spans across the state of Alabama. Although commonly only found in Los Angeles, New York City, or Nashville, Hunt and the Duell Law Firm have developed one of only a handful of Entertainment and Art Law practices in the state of Alabama. "With the continued growth of film projects, folk art and the national recognition of several musical artists from Alabama, there is a growing need for legal representation in arts and entertainment in this state," Hunt says. "This has allowed our firm to step in and meet the needs of artists, producers, and other organizations involved in the arts and entertainment community in Alabama."

Duell Law Firm has continued to develop its art and entertainment law practice. Clients from across the state have employed the services of Hunt and Duell Law Firm for a wide variety of art and entertainment law needs. "Our entertainment practice has assisted writers with book publishing deals, musicians with recording issues, and visual artist with copyright questions," Hunt states. "One of our most unique entertainment clients we represent is ‘12 Gauge Comics’ who produces and packages comics for writers and illustrators across the country."

President Keven Gardner of 12 Gauge Comics, states, "Duell Law Firm has played a vital role in the success of my company. It is very important that my attorney not only understands the entertainment industry, but is also enthusiastic about what I am trying to accomplish. Marcus Hunt is exactly what I was looking for, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the work Duell Law Firm has done to help 12 Gauge Comics prosper."

Hunt has carried his passion for serving the arts and entertainment community in Alabama one-step further. In 2005, Hunt founded Alabama Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (ALAARTS). This nonprofit organization was established to provide both pro-bono and reduced-fee legal and accounting services to artists and arts organizations across the state. Along with the goal of providing legal and accounting services, ALAARTS provides education resources and presents arts-related workshops throughout Alabama. In 2007, Hunt and ALAARTS presented a copyright and trademark seminar for artists and arts organizations in the Huntsville area. "Although Alabama Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts is still in its infancy, we are excited about the potential impact an organization like this can have on the arts community in Alabama," explains Hunt.

As the entertainment and arts community continues to grow in Alabama, Duell Law Firm hopes to be at the forefront of serving the needs of artists and arts organizations. With offices in Birmingham and frequent events in the Huntsville area, Duell Law Firm is always looking to build relationships with those involved in arts and entertainment. The firm also represents clients in such unique practice areas as trademark and copyright law and franchise law. "Our goal is to develop long-term relationships with clients as they become successful artists or businesses," Hunt concludes.

No representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.

Insight Building Inspection, LLC*

Inspections that PINPOINT the Problem

Since 1995, Bill Loden and the inspection team at Insight Building Inspection, LLC have been providing clients the knowledge and proven experience required for residential and commercial inspections to pinpoint problems. As an independent building inspection firm, Insight Building Inspection specializes in water intrusion and energy efficiency investigations using state-of-the-art Thermal Imaging technology.

The latest innovation at Insight Building Inspection is Thermal Imaging. Utilizing technological advancements in infrared fusion cameras, Thermal Imaging identifies specific areas where no insulation exists or where water intrusion problems are found. By providing in-depth, detailed reports with a combination of thermal and visual images the company can pinpoint the defects for effective repair. "Our clients can provide a report to a contractor to show exactly where the problem is located so the contractor doesn’t waste time and money making unnecessary repairs," Bill says.

Bill’s expertise in the inspection industry comes from his educational background and experience in construction and safety management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in construction from Mississippi State University and has had advanced training in commercial building inspection. In addition, Bill is licensed in the state of Alabama, is certified with the American Society of Home Inspectors where he chairs the Ethics committee, and is a certified thermographer. He provides consultation and expert legal testimony for construction defect disputes and litigation.

Insight Building Inspection is often called by customers who think they have a problem with their heating and cooling system. Sometimes the client has been told that they need a bigger heating or cooling unit. "With a thermal scan we can go in and identify the real source of the problem, which is often a lack of insulation," he explains. "With our detailed report containing the thermal images, the home or building owner can spend a few dollars and get a big result. By taking advantage of this Thermal Imaging technology, homeowners and commercial clients can greatly reduce energy costs, increase comfort, and reduce their carbon footprint."

Customer Richard Queeney, states, "This past winter we couldn’t seem to keep our newly built home warm. There were cold spots throughout the house so we called Insight to perform a thermal scan. With his infrared camera, Mr. Loden found serious problems with the insulation…places where insulation was left out of the walls and ceilings. Without the thermal scan we would have never known because these areas are completely hidden. Insight has saved us thousands of dollars in future utility bills."

With water intrusion, Infrared Technology can help identify water entry locations in brick veneer and other siding materials. A thermal scan of a commercial flat roof can locate a leak within a few square feet of the problem, eliminating the need for trial and error repairs or complete roof replacement.

"Our goal at Insight Building Inspection is to push the envelope of customer service for our clients whether they are homeowners, homebuyers, or commercial property owners," Bill says. "That is one of the distinctions of Insight Building Inspection. We’ve always felt our customers deserve the best and we are determined to give it to them."
