LOCAL AREA HIGH SCHOOLS TO WIN GRANTS FOR DRIVER’S SAFETY CAMPAIGN. In an effort to make Alabama’s roadways safer, local State Farm Agents sponsored a safety campaign for high schools in Madison County. The safety program was designed by students in participating high schools to educate their classmates and community about the risks young drivers face and measures they can take to reduce injuries and deaths. The three schools with the winning entries received a $2,000.00, $1,000.00 and $500.00 grant respectively to fund their driver’s safety program. ServisFirst Bank Cuts Prime Lending Rate to 4 Percent. Birmingham, AL – ServisFirst Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of ServisFirst Bancshares, Inc., announced today it is cutting its prime lending rate to 4 percent from 4.5 percent effective immediately. The cut in the prime rate matches the 0.5 percent rate cut the Federal Reserve Board announced Wednesday, October 29th. The prime rate usually moves in lockstep with the fed funds rate, which is now 1.0 percent. Public Libraries Embrace 2010 Year of Small Towns and Downtowns. The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) and local libraries across the state will celebrate Alabama Tourism’s 2010 Year of Small Towns and Downtowns with a Big Read of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”The announcement of the 2010 “Big Read” was made during the quarterly meeting of library administrators held in Montgomery on Oct.16 at the APLS building. Alabama Tourism’s Year of History Coordinator Marilyn Jones Stamps spoke to the group of approximately 200 and shared with them her enthusiasm about the Big Read tie-in. Alabama’s First Lady Unveils Cookbook. First Lady Patsy Riley will unveil her new cookbook, When the Dinner Bell Rings at the Governor’s Mansion, Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Governor’s Mansion. The First Lady and Governor Riley will be on hand at 2:30 p.m. to sign the first 100 “special editions.” Mrs. Riley will then sign regular copies until 4:00 p.m. Event attendees will also be able to sample desserts from the cookbook. Governor Riley and The First Lady sitting at a dinner table in front of the Governor’s Mansion appear on the front cover. More than 300 recipes are featured in the cookbook. Recipes from Mrs. Riley, friends, family, caterers, former U.S. first ladies and representatives from all 50 states make up the nearly 200 page cookbook. “I’m thrilled to share these treasured past and present recipes as I travel across Alabama on the book tour,” said Mrs. Riley. “Nothing brings people together like food. It’s my hope that this cookbook will create treasured memories of fellowship with family and friends as they sit down to enjoy these wonderful recipes.” Alabama Tourism Department graphic artist Amy Shell worked with Mrs. Riley’s staff to create and design the book. The books are available for $20; special editions are $35. All proceeds from the cookbook sales are non-profit and will help maintain the Governor’s Mansion and Farley-Hill House.
