Life Imitating Rugs and Art

It is a great American success story that began in 1989 when Lewis Steinman borrowed $2,000 to sell synthetic rugs off a 40- foot fence along a Southern California roadside. “I sold a great product at a great price, but without a storefront, it takes a different approach than selling from a showroom,” Lewis explains. “All you needed was a hot location.” One location got a little too hot when a sudden rainstorm threatened to put him out of business. “Rugs were flying every direction when a real Aladdin pulled over to help me gather them into the van. He literally played Aladdin at Disneyworld!”

In 1992, Lewis opened a wholesale warehouse in Florida, contracting 13 independent sellers across Tampa Bay. His warehouse allowed him to carry a higher-end product. “The business underwent a metamorphosis after that.”

By 2004, he found success holding Tent Sales at Mall parking lots and by then, Lewis had over 20 years in the rug business: rug design, importing, wholesaling, and retailing. Seven years ago, he added artwork to his product line.

Prime space near the entrance to Parkway Place Mall gave Lewis the opportunity to open his first Rug and Art Bazaar store last fall. Vibrant and alive with merchandise, Lewis often blows out handmade oriental rugs from all over the world at 50% off or more. He also carries a large selection of lower priced machine-made rugs. “I know where to buy them so I can retail them at reasonable rates.”
