TheChorus for a Concert, a Musical ... a Season
In ancient Greek theatre, TheChorus represented the voice
of the people, many voices combined to tell a story by chanting/singing in
rhythm or rounds, but representing the community’s thoughts, the voice of
reason, or telling the audience what is really happening. Things have not
changed that much over the years, for here we are, over a thousand years
later, and TheChorus (Huntsville Community Chorus)—a group of 170 voices of
a community made up of many races, religions, professions, and
backgrounds—is communicating stories and messages to audiences via the
finest in choral presentations and musical theatre productions in the North
Alabama region.
TheChorus is Huntsville’s first performing arts
organization and was established in 1946. Incorporated as the Huntsville
Community Chorus Association (HCCA), it is a nonprofit, all-volunteer
community organization. The backbone of HCCA is its symphonic chorus (TheChorus).
The organization, however, has continued to develop various vocal ensembles,
which, along with musical theatre, help to provide exceptional musical
presentations for the community.
TheChorus (main large chorus) brings incredible energy,
flexibility, and artistry to any performance, whether presenting great
choral/symphonic masterpieces, a jazz classic, or a favorite pop or folk
selection.
The Chamber Chorale is a new, highly select ensemble
auditioned from the larger membership of TheChorus and involves some of
Huntsville’s finest musicians. The HCC Chamber Chorale brings a new
dimension of choral music-making to the city!
The Huntsville Community Children’s Chorus (HC3) is
composed of two ensembles, HC3 and HC3jr. Both groups provide a rich and
rewarding experience that educates young singers in correct vocal technique
and encourages them to share a love of music and desire to excel with
others.
If you enjoy Musical Theatre, HCCA’s talent pool extends
into this realm as well. Each year they produce a fully staged Broadway
musical and a melodrama dinner-theatre. The stage musicals are award-winning
productions and are staffed with many of TheChorus singers. HCCA’s shows are
the talk of the town!
Being a community chorus, TheChorus reaches out to help
the community both locally and nationally. Some examples are concerts that
help the Red Cross, Big Brother/Big Sisters of North Alabama, and the
National Children’s Advocacy Center, providing not only a wonderful concert,
but also an opportunity for the audience to contribute to these deserving
organizations. The Huntsville Community Chorus also sponsors scholarships
each year to reward achievement and excellence in vocal music for both a
high-school senior and a post-high-school student.
