Ticket to Success
In today’s corporate setting, exceptional manners not
only enhance a company’s image, but also increase employee morale and
significantly contribute to bottom-line profitability.
The word "etiquette" goes back to the days of the French
Court, where people were given pieces of paper called "etiquettes" (the
French word for tickets) on which proper ways to behave were written so
people wouldn’t be banished from court for misbehavior. As everyone left,
they would wave to each other and say, "Don’t forget to study your
etiquette." As Americans, we took the word to mean proper behavior.
June Guthier, a social/business etiquette consultant, is
bringing these "tickets of success" to the Tennessee Valley. She is a
certified member of The Etiquette Institute of St. Louis. June was trained
by "Saint Louis’ First Lady of Manners", Marie Everding, who has more than
20 years of etiquette experience.
June recently worked with Virginia College and Northeast
Alabama Community College (NACC) to develop programs that incorporate
etiquette training into their curriculums and spoke to faculty and students
about social and business etiquette. Richard D. Seibert, Jr., Director of
General Education and Preparatory Studies at Virginia College, says, "Miss
Guthier met with our Career Planning classes that are designed to give
students strategies for success. Many students indicated afterward that they
gained insight regarding the do’s and don’ts accepted as standards within
the professional world."
Susan Barron, Director of High School Relations and Event
Planning at NACC, adds, "Miss Guthier was very prepared and knowledgeable.
Her use of humor in her presentation helped us look at ourselves in a
relaxed manner and see how we might be perceived by our business associates
and students."
This Spring, June is scheduled to present a workshop for
Liz Wilson at the University of South Carolina. The social/business training
syllabus will cover Communications, Lasting Impressions, Meetings, Job
Interview, Co-worker Courtesy, Appearance, and Table Manners.
June comments, "My custom-tailored approach has proven
successful with individuals, companies, and with professional organizations,
associations, and universities. My goal is to create a professional image
that reflects positively upon each individual by giving them an opportunity
to learn poise and confidence. Good-mannered, confident employees provide
the needed edge in today’s aggressive, consumer-driven economy."
